Today’s Legal Environment

Pursuant to several federal and state laws, various types of conduct that were once condoned in the workplace are no longer acceptable. Behaviors that were once common may now expose employers, including local governments, to significant liability.

Consequently, administrators, human resources professionals, managers and supervisors can no longer afford to make employment-related decisions without first considering the legal ramifications of their actions. Failure to do so could result in a lawsuit and expose a local government to significant liability, including damages awards and attorney’s fees.

How the Employment Law Hotline Helps LGIT Members

The LGIT Employment Law Hotline helps employers resolve a wide range of employment issues that could potentially result in costly litigation.

How It Works

The Employment Law Hotline is available at no charge to LGIT members of the Primary Liability Pool. It provides members with direct access to a licensed Maryland attorney at Karpinski, Cornbrooks, and Karp P.A., during normal business hours, who will answer legal questions and help resolve specific issues and situations that arise in the workplace. These attorneys can provide up to 30 minutes of free legal advice for each employment issue.

The attorneys will help resolve a wide range of employment-related issues that could result in costly litigation. They will provide sound legal advice on a wide array of employment issues and statutes, including, but not limited to:

  • Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Racial, gender or religious discrimination
  • Unlawful harassment claims

In the unfortunate event that a member finds itself involved in litigation based upon an employment decision, they should be in a better position to defend itself if they used the Employment Law Hotline before making an employment decision.

Please note: Calls to the Employment Law Hotline must be made by your organization’s designated LGIT contract. Please contact LGIT if you do not know whom that person is. Consulting the Employment Law Hotline does not fulfill the member’s obligation to report claims otherwise required by LGIT. The Employment Law Hotline is not a substitute for legal advice from your local government attorney.

Financial Benefit for Using the Employment Law Hotline

If a member uses the Employment Law Hotline before making an employment decision, and the matter later results in litigation, the member’s deductible for that matter will be reduced by half.

LGIT Personnel Policy Review

LGIT members who utilize the Employment Law Hotline are encouraged to provide a copy of their Personnel Policy to their Loss Control Services contact at LGIT.
