Weather Safety Tips

With snow and ice forecasted to impact Maryland, LGIT is sharing the following winter weather safety and preparedness tips to help municipalities and counties reduce risk and protect people, property, and operations.

Before the Storm

  • Monitor weather forecasts and emergency alerts closely.
  • Inspect roofs, gutters, and drainage areas to ensure they are clear and able to handle snow and ice buildup.
  • Secure outdoor items such as signage, benches, and trash receptacles.
  • Prepare snow and ice removal equipment and confirm availability of salt, sand, and other de-icing materials.
  • Review staffing and response plans for snow and ice operations.

During the Storm

  • Limit non-essential travel and encourage employees to use caution if travel is necessary.
  • Watch for downed trees, power lines, and icy conditions.
  • Treat entrances, walkways, and steps as conditions allow to reduce slip and fall hazards.
  • Maintain clear access to emergency routes and building entrances.

After the Storm

  • Inspect buildings, roofs, and grounds for damage once conditions are safe.
  • Remove snow and ice promptly from sidewalks, parking areas, and entrances.
  • Be alert for refreezing, falling ice, and weakened trees or structures.
  • Document any property damage with photos and report claims to LGIT as soon as possible.
